Actually, this sounds like an appropriate use of AJAX-like progressive reveal of additional information in a sidebar. As visitors move through the application/form and fill in the data, in-context messages to the side explaining the implications of their responses/decisions could be designed so as not to be intrusive or distracting. It really comes down to how complex a set of conditions need to be met before meaning full "sidebar context" can be offered.
