Yes I agree with you 100%. But I also advocate using the right tools for
the right job. Being a CMS means being a portal site or an information
publishing site. But you can utilize the features of a CMS to do more
than simply "publishing" and "portalizing" without the need to re-code
and re-tool to become an Application Server. 

Because unless the Application Server actually performs the functions is
directs you to it isn't really anything more than a gateway to the right
app anyway...so it is in some respects a "portal" also. But other
projects that wish to go this route have talked about implementing code
and tools that take the levels of abstraction to such a level of
complexity that it only appeals to a niche group in their own user base.

I would rather see the foundation there to allow those niche players to
do what they want without sacrificing the very principles of a CMS. I
think you agree from what I read in your reply.

But to reaffirm...you are very perceptive on the breeding ground for
ideas approach. We just need to be careful that we don't try to be all
things for all people because that is something no project can
accomplish IMHO.

Yes. As do I. Taking it one step further if the core is truly
modularized this would be what you would have in the first place. This
is something I think we all desire to achieve with Envolution.
