[EP-underground] Help setting up eprints

First, let me apologize for cross posting.  I'm not quite clear on the difference between the underground and the tech list so i am posting this to both.  

I have been given the task of setting up an eprints server on my web server. I have downloaded the eprints software and  installed all the necessary auxiliary packages. My question is how eprints interacts with the web server that I am already running.  (Just for the record, I am already running apache with mod_perl). Is eprints supposed to run its own httpd process with its own configuration files? Is it supposed to run on a different port? Is it supposed to run as a virtual server on my existing web server? The installation instructions say simply to run install-eprints.pl  I do not like to simply run installation scripts without understanding what I am doing.  Especially since I am afraid i will mess up my existing web server.  What got me nervous, was the instructions to change the user and group of the httpd process to eprints.  Does this mean the user and group lines in my current configuration file or, I hope, in a separate eprints configuration file?  What I need, I t
 hink is a better explanation of how the eprints server lives together with my existing web server.
