Thank you so much, Trey, your patch has worked wonderfully. I no longer have to deal with a zombie per process, nor do I need a separate script to take down the fastcgi listeners. I've mirrored your patch at http://rubyists.com/articles/2005/05/03/spawn-fcgi-in-the-foreground. Is this something that might help out the problem of servers such as lighttpd which also seems to have issues stopping listeners that it spawns with sockets? I see this as the most common problem in the Ruby on Rails community utilizing fastcgi, and it seems to occur on apache at times, as well.
