Thank you so much, Trey, your patch has worked wonderfully.  I no
longer have to deal with a zombie per process, nor do I need a
separate script to take down the fastcgi listeners.  I've mirrored
your patch at http://rubyists.com/articles/2005/05/03/spawn-fcgi-in-the-foreground.
 Is this something that might help out the problem of servers such as
lighttpd which also seems to have issues stopping listeners that it
spawns with sockets?  I see this as the most common problem in the
Ruby on Rails community utilizing fastcgi, and it seems to occur on
apache at times, as well.  Sure would like to see at least the
supervision option make it upstream.
