I am in a position (and I am sure there are many others in my shoe) that I need to use a variety of different tools to move larger projects forward. For example, I use postgres and I don't know everything about postgres. I use postgres because it has a very active discussion group/support organization based on mailing list. At times, I cannot afford to read the manual to do the right thing and tips from experts are priceless. It would be a mistake (costly one at that) for me to use fastcgi and get stuck in a land where there is little support.
