And I split FastCGI in two parts: first is architectural design (the protocol itself, which isn't require any sort of support or community to use it), and second is a tool - mod_fastcgi for web server apache (which I think require more active community and support). For example, if I switch from apache to nginx someday, I'll not use mod_fastcgi anymore, but I'll continue using FastCGI protocol... and my projects will not depend on mod_fastcgi support and community.
