I'd say even the lower-ability end of the users know that in general, if all windows are closed, the application has "gone". Of course, the Microsoft MDI addiction goes against that, but these users also don't entirely understand MDI. Witness the number of times my gf has minimized the document window in Word when she meant to minimize the Word window.
