Note that in above I'm only talking about the behavior what should
happen *when* I hit tab, this has no relevance to showing the list after
the small delay.

I hit tab because I want it to complete the non-ambiguous part, nothing
more.  After the completion, I just continue typing as usual.  If the
dropdown list is shown instantly at that point, it's nothing but
distracting.  Isn't the delay used to avoid exactly this kind of
distraction?

Single tab press should act just as if I had manually typed the
non-ambiguous part myself.  After pressing the tab I could easily wait
the small delay, or hit tab again to see the dropdown list, *if* I
wanted to.
