That requires users to interact with Galeon using the command line
(having to issue a "galeon --quit" when they want to finish the
program). I thought Galeon was a GUI application.

$ galeon --help | grep -A 1 resident
  -r, --resident                 Don't exit Galeon when the last window is
                                 closed

Because --resident is being very explicit regarding what it does.
Omitting the flag, you can still have the behaviour you describe.
Users are free to not "get confused" and not use --resident.

Imho, that's the actual server mode which is being confusing: one
expects File->Exit to exit the program, as its documentation states.

Good luck. While you are at it, also make it not leak memory, and
contact the vendors of the plugins to ask them to do the same. ;)

No. --resident is not made as a kludgy hack to hide some not perfect
Galeon behaviour: that's a side effect it achieves, and, well, good.

Also, no startup option is added: --resident replaces --server.

On the other hand, I agree with you, there is no technical advantage
of "--resident" over your "--server --new-window" (besides perhaps
some simplicity added, but okay, some users might want to start a
galeon --server without any new window, not possible using
--resident).

Still, reason mandates File->Exit to be coherent.
