In Gnome's keyboard settings, you can set your keyboard to be Emacs-like. If you do this, then Ctrl-E and Ctrl-U will work as intended. Ctrl-A still selects all, since the menu shortcuts takes preference over the text field shortcuts. I find this really annoying. Why can't Ctrl-A be handled like TAB? One last note: The emacs-settings don't work unless gnome-settings-daemon is running. I'm not sure who's responsible for starting this one, but I only use the gnome-panel, and then gnome-settings-daemon isn't started.
