You are correct that there are usage patterns like your xchat one that
bring out the worst in the current scheme. How would you feel if the
behaviour was modifed so that externally provoked new tabs  would always
open at the end but middle-clicks etc would work as they currently do?

That seems sensible to me. Of course, I'm also not a hard one to
convince to add a pref. :-) tko?

I believe that actual reason is that bonoboui makes it a complete and
utter slog to add a context menu to an element. You have to use a
gtkwidget and wedge it in to the bonoboui container (like poor ric had
to do for the toolbar buttons). When we dump bonoboui, this should be
trivial to do again, and we probably will.

Agreeed. We should have a basic set of always-relevant context menu
actions that are always available. Again, this will probably wait until
I rip bonoboui out.

Worst. design decision. ever.
