just check that you can run "acroread" from the command line.

The PATH variable is a list of paths searched by the shell to run a
command, for example /bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
If a command is there, you can invoke it by just typing its name and not
what is before it in the path...

Anyway, better use free software, xpdf is really good and can be used as
a plugin with mozplugger with no effort
