I bet the well known fat Mozilla is your enemy, not Galeon :) Do you have an idea which version of Mozilla is linked with your Galeon installation? Try testing Mozilla the very same way, it is supposed to grow that much on memory usage too. If it doesn't, please go ahead and file a bug against Galeon. And if it does, I wouldn't bother filing a bug on Mozilla Bugzilla, because there are already a bunch of them :) Also, when testing Mozilla; just to be sure, I would temporarily remove or disable all the plugins I have installed; since a misdesigned plugin may lead to the very same problem.
