That's exactly why it deserves a UI pref -- It's crack that a lot of users love, but just slightly (and, unavoidably) breaks the GUI.  In order to keep a 100% clean GUI we leave it off by default, but provide an easy way to enable it for everyone that wants it.

If you wanted to see what the UI changes look like, I can provide a screenshot.  It's pretty simple.
