...and putting somewhat frequently needed functionality in some tab
inside a dialog that is reachable from the menus is just as bad.

I'd be more than happy to remove the whole option myself and have JS
always enabled if simply worked.  But the Internet is broken.  There are
too many sites that use JS for all the wrong things.  And many of those
who can use JS right, write it compatible with IE only and similar
shortcomings.

Unfortunately, until everything "just works" we need that option.  If
you don't need that, good for you, but some of us do.

And cookies aren't? (see the PDM)  Though, if you can get the
java/javascript console popped up using 'javascript:' URL as you said in
your other mail, 'cookies:' for PDM might work as well.

You can use bookmarks to access those, but that presents another
problem: the bookmark can be removed way too easily (at the moment, at
least.)  Whether that is a real problem, I'm uncertain.  But there is a
reason why user can't accidently remove items from menus.

Ok, this can be somewhat of a problem since there is no visual
indication for how javascript affects the looks of the web pages.  But
has anyone really complained about that?  It's a mistake you usually
make only once, and even that only if you go turning knobs you know
nothing about.
