Ideas for future of Galeon 2

Hi,

I really hope things can be worked out, at least so that any kind of major 
fork can be avoided... At least I don't see any unsolvable issues that 
couldn't be worked around....

You guys are probably aware of the Phoenix project 
(http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/), but I'll talk about it a little 
in case people have missed it...

The really great idea in Phoenix is that it aims to be very simple browser. 
No bells and whistles except those that are directly related to _browsing_ 
the web.

Phoenix has, however, a very clever idea called "extensions" which are 
pluggable functional and UI-adding features. The extensions can be 
downloaded and installed straight from a webpage and are usable after 
restarting the browser. (Plugins is a term reserved for web plugins such as 
realplayer).

What's so great in this idea, is that the focus is on "vanilla" browser, 
that can be enhanced and even choked full of extensions. BUT: those 
extensions are individually chosen by each user.

There are several technological approaches that would be lighter weight than 
the extensions approach, although they would probably not be as flexible. In 
the intrest of fast results, some of the alternative approaches could be 
chosen as intermediate solutions...

So, what I'm hoping, is that people could agree on building a "vanilla" 
browser, but at the same time would agree on and implement some sort of 
extension mechanism with which the more function-full browser supporters 
could extend the vanilla one, without the need for separating the 
development trees.

If the extension system is smart, I see no reason why galeon could not have 
the same garden of add-ons that are available for mozilla (mozdev.org) and 
for several IM-clones, for example....
