gnome-settings-daemon listens to GConf and translates its settings to
actual changes in your apps. For instance, theme changes or font changes
will go through gnome-settings-daemon. It's certainly a necessary tool;
that functionality does *not* belong in GConf.

As for gtkrc: just use Google, I suppose. I've never edited it :).
