Re: MIME types, again ("Nautilus" ain't the answer)

I wouldn't mind going out of Galeon (into Nautilus, say)
to set file associations, IF it were easy or even possible to do so.

But on one of my Gnome desktops (Debian, at work) I simply haven't been
able to change default file associations.  Neither of the two ways
supposedly avaiable (according to <Nautilus 2.8.2> Help | Assigning Actions)
works:

(1) "File Types and Programs" preference tool -- can't find any such thing.
Some web pages say it's under
<Desktop> Applications | Desktop Preferences | Advanced
but not on my system.  Can't find it in Nautilus either.

(2) <Nautilus> File | Open With | Other Application and then Modify.
The last button (Modify) does not exist.  I can add applications, but
not set a new defualt.

Am I missing something obvious?
