Note that we might *well* want a way to vary colour schemes, font sizes
and the like across many dimensions:

- display devices
- users
- X sessions
- hosts
- arbitrary criteria not visible to X (`This app is on the other end of
  a slow satellite link, please use a very low-impact colour scheme with
  no gradient fills')

I've also wanted the ability to vary things in more elaborate ways than
this: a friend of mine is blind, and when she comes around I want to
make sure that my X apps are using a colour scheme and so on simple
enough for my (hacky but functional) screen reader to pick up. I can do
that change dynamically with some apps (e.g. Emacs). With most, I'm
stuffed.

(Yes, part of the problem here is that said screen reader hack needs
improving! Equally of course, I have no actual *need* to do anything
with Emacs, because the downright godly thing that is Emacspeak takes
the screen-reading load off my hacky screen reader.)


Skins suck, of course: they manage not to be customizable enough
in important ways yet totally disrupt the look and feel of the app
in most others. But that doesn't mean customizability is *bad*.
