mime-types without gnome

I run galeon 1.3.20 without the gnome desktop, and browsing the list
archives led me to:

 In short: create a .desktop file in /usr/local/share/applications
 (look in /usr/share/applications for examples) and run
 update-desktop-database. 

I did so, and put into the the .desktop file the following line:

  [MIME Cache]
  video/mpg=gxine.desktop

I ran # update-desktop-database, and it generated a mimeinfo.cache
file with the sole line:

  [MIME Cache]

and the command also generated the error message:

  Could not parse file '/usr/local/share/applications/.desktop':
  desktop entry file does not start with legal start group

The applications directory is owned by root:staff, and likewise the
.desktop and the mimeinfo.cache files.
