links in sidebar don't work

A new installation of galeon 1.3.20, and I find that double clicking the bookmark links in my sidebar does nothing. All that happens is that the name of the link looses its highlight. I can RMB click to bring up a menu for the link, and that works OK to create a tab or window for the target URL. The bookmarks in the menu also work fine. I find that all users, including root suffer from the same problem. I tried to purge and reinstall galeon, but that just got me into trouble with other gnome applications, and so I backed out with minor damage.
