Yes, I suppose the original comment should have been, "put one of the *.desktop files into /usr/share/applications." I copied the galeon.desktop file into /usr/share/applications and ran update-desktop-database. It created a mimeinfo.cache file with the lines: [MIME Cache] application/xml=galeon.desktop text/xml=galeon.desktop application/html+xml=galeon.desktop text/html=galeon.desktop But if I now double click an .mpg file, galeon still opens only a save dialog with the comment, "It is not possible to view this file directly in the browser." I tried adding the gxine.desktop file and rebuilt the mimeinfo.cache, but it had no effect.
