galeon mime without gnome to view troff

People were so kind helping me out to get galeon to use helper
applications without the gnome desktop installed that I hesitate to
raise the question again.

Specifically, galeon 1.3.20 is looking at a document repository on
line, and one of the documents is a READ.ME. When I download this
readme and view it with # file --mime, I find that its mimetype is:
text/plain;charset=us-ascii

I'd like to have galeon call upon a helper to view its content while
on line. However, under galeon, when I click on this READ.ME file, it
only offers to Save, and does not offer a helper application with
which I might view it. This Save dialog tells me:
application/x-troff-me. 

I assume the helper application should be groff.

So I create /usr/share/local/applications/groff.desktop, and put into
it the lines:

  [Desktop Entry]
  Name=groff
  Exec=groff
  Terminal=false
  Type=Application
  MimeType=application/x-troff-me

and update-desktop-database.

Now when I click on the READ.ME, I get instead of the Save dialog, a
"Open this file with "groff" dialog, and it offers groff as the
helper. However, when I select groff and proceed to Open the file, the
window (I suppose it to be) opens and closes instantly. I tried
Terminal=true without luck.   

In principle, the MIME type is MimeType=text/plain;charset=us-ascii,
but I get a parse error when I try to rebuild the database. If instead
I use just MimeType=text/plain, the galeon Save dialog does not offer
a helper application. 

Shouldn't the mime-type as reported by # file --mime be the value for
MimeType= in the .desktop file?

How does one get galeon to use a helper app to display a troff file?
