Questions about tabs

Piggybacking on the current discussion, I wonder if some can tell me: (1) how to restore the behaviour -- which I found EXTREMELY useful in 1.2 -- of having the tab headers abbreviated to save space. As I recall, vowels and repeated consonants would be hidden. As a result I could see 12 or 14 tabs at once instead of the current 7. I've looked in ExtraPrefs and didn't find it there, but I refuse to believe that this feature could have just disappeared, it was enormously useful. (2) Is there a way to get rid of the X that closes a tab? It is NEVER the case that I want to close a tab other than the one that's currently on top, and to close the tab on top, ^W is far easier than moving the mouse to a spot 0.09 square centimeters in area. So the only time when the X gets clicked on is by accident, and when that happens I curse myself, Galeon and the whole world.
