That will shut X down!

More profitable perhaps is to run oprofile and see where kdeinit is
spending its time.

There is one thing which might well cause it: the latest released
version of the gtk-qt Gtk theme engine has a truly impressive memory
leak which first shows itself in exactly this way --- spontaneous
periodic massive galeon, kdeinit and X server memory usage, every five
minutes or so.

Worse is that several Mb of pixmaps get leaked into the X server each
time: I noticed this when my X server's VSZ exceeded 1.3Gb and processes
started dying for lack of allocatable memory...

The solution is to get gtk-qt from its CVS HEAD and build that; the
bug's fixed there.
