Well, after a bit more reading the problem does seem to be an xorg one,
but this one brought back sanity to my browsing (not much of a
horizontal scroller anyway).

For other applications this was suggested:

° Add Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" under Section "InputDevice"
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf 

I cannot say anything about this since I used the "about:config" one.
