I doubt it: I didn't install gnome desktop environment. Or do I
misunderstand what the Gnome proxy is?

As for the source not being the source, I did find out that C-u does
not really display the source (in either galeon or iceweasel). For
example, the real source links to a style sheet used to format the
fake source. The fake source has no style defined for it.

This is the source as displayed by C-u (there's no DOCTYPE defined for
either source):

<HTML>

<HEAD>
<TITLE>TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, TI-84+ Graphing Calculator Quick Reference</TITLE>
<META Name="keywords" CONTENT="TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, TI-84+ Texas Instruments, Graphing Calculator, Quick Reference">
<META Name="description" CONTENT="A quick-and-dirty quick reference guide to the TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, and TI-84+ Graphing Calculators">
</HEAD>

<BODY BACKGROUND="../images/shared/background.gif">

<IMG SRC="../images/ti/ti83_small.jpg" ALIGN=LEFT WIDTH=124 HEIGHT=314 ALT="TI-83">
<BR>

<CENTER>
...

Here is what I have when I save the source:

<html>
<head>
<title>http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/users/f/felder/public/kenny/papers/ti.html</title>
</head>

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="test-source.html_content/viewsource.css">

<body id="viewsource" class="wrap">

<pre id="line1">&lt;<span class="start-tag">HTML</span>&gt;
...

This "HTML" is the HTML seen in the fake source. All this is probably
irrelevant, but it may be a hint that galeon is trying to save an
ambivalent document. I can save the images in the document OK, and
just have problems with the document as a whole.
