+1 with separating the theme change out - doing this piecemeal is probably

Dunno what's going to be best here.  Personally I'd like to import all that
data into a Gallery3 instance and do a really lightweight integration
(maybe iframe based or something similar) to bridge us over to D7.  If we
skip user synchronization, etc - I imagine this won't be so difficult?
 What do you think?

work here.  Andy S wrote the code - I have no idea how complex it is.  Have
you looked at it yet?
