Trying HttpBL for Drupal sounds like a relatively simple thing to try to stem the current flood. I see that HttpBL has a Drupal 7 version, which is an added bonus. Te module page states that Drupal.org uses it, wonder of they still do?

Bharat, I'd install it, but I don't think I have SSH access to GMC's host.
