For this, install the following packages:

system      SUNWbtool      CCS tools bundled with SunOS
system      SUNWbtoox      CCS libraries bundled with SunOS (64-bit)

I suggest you install these packages also, as when "ar" is really not installed
in "/usr/ccs/bin", then probably "ranlib", "ldd" and other utilities are 
also missing:

system      SUNWscpr       Source Compatibility, (Root)
system      SUNWscpu       Source Compatibility, (Usr)
system      SUNWscpux      Source Compatibility (Usr) (64-bit)
system      SUNWsprot      Solaris Bundled tools
system      SUNWsprox      Sun WorkShop Bundled 64-bit make library
system      SUNWtoo        Programming Tools
system      SUNWtoox       Programming Tools (64-bit)

Add "/usr/ccs/bin" to your path and you should be happy. :)
How "old" your Solaris 8 is, can be determined by "uname -a". The latest
kernel patch revision should be 117350-26. See also the hardware revision in
/etc/release.
