Well, I wrote the code, and I think it's an ugly mess (it uses
multi-line macros, references to the CondReturnTextNode are not
terminated by ';', etc.). As I pointed out, the code was never
intended to be used when you are using the default parser loops,
so there are indeed rather obvious bugs when you do this. I
probably tried to allow this, but there were a number of problems
in related code that made this seem very difficult to me.

Arnaud et al, you got any thoughts about the patches or this feature?
