Is the response returned just the same as prior to submitting the form?

What about checkMultipleEmail ? What's in there?

Strange, rhino usually throws the most unhelpful of errors ....

As an after thought - have you actually checked to see if the alert box is 
present? WebClient.popNextAltert() ??
