Yesterday I talked with Patrick on the phone for about 
an hour (so it got a long day given my other project 
...) and I've pointed out that providing links right 
into the sources (like this one):

and the testcases (like this one):

Is IMHO a way to make the learning curve for people 
about how the sources and test cases are structured 
easier to manage. 

This way the sources and tests are "just one click 
away". In that respect the subversion repository viewer 
feature of the source forge web site is a big plus.

In the cases where bug reports and patches follow the 
existing structure it's really a lot of fun and not much 
work to add these improvements. 

Another suggestion I made was suggesting XAMPP and PHP 
code snippets as an environment for one part of the 
tutorial. 

On the otherhand for the 1.7 release much less work 
needs to be done as Tim says above - knew release notes 
and some pointers to the current resources (e.g. the 
above subversion viewer - this developer mailinglist) 
will do for the time being. I think it's important to 
allow for the 1.7 jar download and see how well it works 
in the real world. Given the way the patches were 
integrated I'm assuming it will solve far more problems 
then it will create new ones. With some 760 test cases 
at this point (of which more than 680 are unchanged) it 
should still do what it did in the past while it fixes 
issues people have long been living with (or using their 
own patches).
