According to our Unix QA it's possible. Since you compiled VLC, you just  
need to `make install`, or something like `make installplugin` - maybe you  
additionally also has to copy the plugin .so to a location that you'll  
have opera inspect for plugins (prefs > advanced > content > plugins).
