The workaround I found was to move the search toolbar to the bottom of 
the screen using the Toolbars tab on the Appearance dialog.  If you're 
scrolled to the bottom of the screen the same problem happens in 
reverse, but that's less frequent.

A side effect of this is that opening the Appearance or Preferences 
dialog after this causes the toolbar to appear again sometimes... This 
may have been fixed recently, since it's a while since I've seen it.

I usually also zero the "Dim Search Opacity" item in configuration to 
stop the darkening of the screen, which makes the behavior pretty close 
to previous versions.
