Thanks for your suggestions! opera:plugins is actually worth a 2nd and
3rd look; there are many plugins enabled by default that I don't need (I
believe) - e.g. an " iTunes Application Detector", a " Windows Media
Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)", and the mentioned Shockwave
Flash 11.2 r202.

Other software our systems have in common is the NVIDIA Driver Version
295.49, so possibly there's something between this Flash version and the
current NVIDIA driver that doesn't play well in Opera. On the other
hand, Chromium uses the same Flash version and has no issues. Hmm.

Considering that I just "upgraded" Ubuntu from 11.04 to 12.04 just for
security reasons, I'd be not too happy rolling back to an older Flash 
version.

Thus, as a temporary workaround, I disabled most of the plugins in
Opera; I can live a lot better without Flash than with a slow browser.
So far, I did not encounter those freezes anymore. And Youtube looks a
lot slicker that way ;)
