How to make Opera 12.10 not crawl?

Hi,

I yesterday "upgraded" to Opera 12.10 (Build 1652 on Ubuntu with x86_64, 
3.2.0-32-generic; Gnome Classic) and have major issues to browse *any* 
website. Typical page load times before were 2-4 seconds according to 
Opera's status bar, now they're in the minute range. Pages from Google, 
Amazon or with embedded "Share this" buttons do not load at all. Of 
course, other browsers like Chromium, Firefox, or Seamonkey do *not* 
show this behaviour; it has nothing to do with my Internet line or the 
websites to be accessed, Opera 12.10 is simply unusable as the update 
was configured on my desktop PC.

Thank god for alternative browsers like Chromium, so I could research 
about the "enhancements" in this Opera release and found hints about a 
SPDY protocol. This was disabled in my Opera installation, so I went to 
about:config and enabled SPDY2 and SPDY3. Now sites like Amazon and 
Google *do* load, but partially with an inacceptable speed (e.g. ~60-70 
seconds for a page at Amazon.de); other pages from the same site load 
fast, as before, but it's impossible to guess when Opera will start to 
crawl again.

I'm using a dual screen setup with two browsers side-by-side; when Opera 
enters crawling mode on one screen, the other Opera window hangs as 
well. This is extremely annoying when I edit a text in Opera window I 
and try to google something in Opera window II - I have to enter a text 
editor just to be able to continue typing until Opera has finished 
loading the Google search result page.

On my system, Opera 12.10 feels like browsing the web over a modem 15 
years ago. Is anyone else experiencing this as well? Is this release 
simply buggy, or are there known tweaks to make it simply work as before?

Maybe relevant: I have disabled plugins globally (because of other 
performance issues), and I am not using Opera "Turbo" as it tends to 
slow down Internet access, as well.
