products attributes and differential product totals

Hello,
   I was wondering what the status is of integrating the ability of differentiating in product totals such instances say:

2 blue shirts
3 green shirts

so that each attribute, color (blue/green) is accounted in the catalog database  instead of 5 shirts, it would list 2 blue, 3 green. or is this already done and i just missed it and am a goof ball? is anyone else thinking of changing the code so it does this and if yes, how do you plan on doing it before i jump into the coding jungle. i realize it's been done using QtPro for 2.2MS1 but what about MS2
