I'll be having a look at your code soon-ish, if you are interested in working together on finishing this (comparing code, testing, bugfixing, etc..) contact me off list to work something out.

We can leave the whole PEAR::DB database abstraction layer out of the combined code if you don't want it in. All of these changes are contained in includes/functions/database.php (and some config settings in incldes/configure.php) so it's easy to leave this out of it.
