The cost for merchants in the US is *ver* inexpensive. Lots of people have paypal accounts they like to use. However, once you get up and running, you are going to want to offer an alternative, in addition to paypal. People that do not already have a paypal account are often turned of by having to create a paypal account to pay you. They want to be your customers, not paypal's. Also, there seems to be alot of fraudulent orders going around on paypal right now. I think you'll find that if you start off with paypal, and then add a second option, like 2 checkout, or even your own merchant account/gateway, you maximize your potential customer base.
