DIY, by reading this Forum, the Wiki and the other Forums scattered about the net.  Also see www.php.net - jump in and start coding.  Basic changes are done through the stylesheet.  To make your site look like a non-Oscommerce site, will take much more coding than that.  

Or if time is short and you need a quick fix, consider posting in the "commercial section" of this Forum, or at the hundreds of other places where a developer can be found.
