I might write a contribution for this myself, it seems like a core improvement:

I think it would be a good idea to add a mechanism to explain a complicated product attribute.  For example, an optional pop-up window that would explain the different options.  It's a pretty simple option to add, an extra column in the option table that could contain a url to a static html page.  Then add a "(more info)" link that pops up the explanation.

For an example of this feature in action take a quick look at the Dell web site.  Each of the options for their computers has an information link on it.
