  This is exactly the problem the MySQL Merge Tables handler adresses by
  maintaining separate pot_accesslog and pot_visitors tables for each
  month.

  The tables for the months previous to the current one should be
  compressed by myisampack [1]. And if you want to archive your data,
  simply copy the tables somewhere else, for instance into a backup
  database.

  There is still room for improvement in the MySQL Merge Tables handler.
  One thing that comes to mind is configurable interval for which separate
  tables should be created, ie. one table per month, day or even one
  table per hour. Maybe I'll get this done for the phpOpenTracker 1.3.0
  release.
