Folks,
Due to popular demand, I'm looking for a quick fix to this problem
that Mike pointed out. It seems to have a couple of facets, one being
that some people want the "most recently updated" albums to float to
the top, and other people also want the ability to somehow specify
arbitrary album orderings on the Viewer Home.
I like the proposal from Gunnar. It pushes the burden of ensuring the
album ordering onto the Composer (rather than the Viewer) and it seems
to (I think) cover the major cases. And it's fairly easy for me to
implement
Let me recapitulate his scheme so I can be sure we are all talking
about the same thing:
Each album would have a new attribute: the "effective date"
(effective for the sake of ordering on the Viewer home). The Composer
could set this to:
1) "use date of 1st picture in album"
2) "use custom date"
option 1) effectively allows you to specify earliest or latest dates,
because the "Flow" editor currently allows you to specify date
ascending or date descending order.
Then the "Viewer Home" will always sort according to this effective date.
Note carefully one side-effect of this: if you want the album to
appear on the "Viewer Home" according to it's "latest date", the
album has to be internally sorted in "date descending" order. This
means that the pictures within this album will be sorted from latest
to earliest (the most recent pictures come first). Does this make
sense? For instance
Another nuance here is the meaning of the term "latest date".
Technically, the "latest date" for an album is not the most recent
date on which the Composer added a picture to the album. It's the
picture date (from file date or
metadata) of the youngest (most recent) picture in the album. So
imagine this scenario: you have an existing album and some old images
(with exif data) that are not currently in the album. You add some of
those images to the album. But since the picture dates of those images
are older than some of the pictures already in the album, the "latest
date" date doesn't change. In other words, "latest date" DOES NOT
EQUAL what most people would think of as "last update date". Does
this work? Or do some people believe that "last update date" (most
recent date on which picture was added to album) should be tracked
separately from "latest date" (date of most recent picture in album)?
regards,
joe
