There is a freebsd project htt://www.freebsd.org/java with a link to JDK 1.4.x downloads. There shouldn't be any question of compiling the dist into the environment, it is pre-compiled. BTW I haven't used these and am not on freebsd, but the mac OS is based in bsd and that seems like a positive pointer if you need to use bsd.
