Hi,

*Sorry if I mention too much politics here.*

I live in China, so I know how your feel being blocked. And we spent a lot
of time to deal with government censorship, so may be I can share some
experience with you.

As far as I know, polipo itself cannot bypass censorship, because it is a
HTTP proxy, meaning it will not encrypt what you send/recv. And the
firewall government is using (we call it Great FireWall, GFW in short) is
usually block request based on your URL. So simply install a polipo in
your VPS cannot bypass it, unless polipo can be configured as a HTTPS
proxy (SSL).

But the polipo can redirect sock4a proxy as a HTTP proxy. The ssh tunnel
will encrypt your data. So it SHOULD work. Juliusz has explained it
clearly.

A little bit off topic, share you some software we use.

Google provide a app engine which can use url_fetch, so can be used as a
HTTPS proxy. What's more, appengine is FREE. If you simply need access to
Facebook or Feedly, it is enough. But you need write a python/java/go
program to do this.

VPN can be configured to ONLY redirect request you wish, and without
routing my hole network. You may need to search "VPN router table" or so.

More off topic, There is FOUR countries in the world where cannot access
to YouTube or Facebook, Syrian Iran China and North Korea, we call them
"SICK".
