It seems very flexible and, usefully, supports xml output and xsl formatting that I might be able to use to at least get the format of the messages exactly right, even though of course there'll be a bunch of deletion and comprehensibility improvements that need to follow. In my experience rewording the commit messages takes most of the time and as pretty much every message that is kept has to be changed anyway I wouldn't worry too much about the initial formatting. > I have a few questions so that I can try to get this right first time: > > - I'm guessing that there's a limit to the ChangeLog line length so that the sgml conversion goes smoothly - what is the max line length allowed? The conversion script doesn't have a hard limit, but it's preferable to keep the line length below 80 characters so the text version can be conveniently read without requiring a reader that does line wrapping. > - is the indenting and hyphenation crucial? i.e. two spaces and a hyphen before an item, no spaces and a hyphen before a section heading? The converter requires a somewhat consistent indentation to get the nesting right, the hyphen is used to detect items and the colon is required to detect list headers. Keeping the current indentation and hyphenation is also desirable to keep the style somewhat consistent.
