I got a large tarball containing lots of stuff but didn't

A patch posted to this list certainly would make review more
convenient and allow other people to comment as well.

My first impression is that your changes currently make
logging to a file and logging to syslog mutually exclusive.

I think a dedicated config directive for this would be more
convenient, additionally it would probably make sense to add
a configure flag for this.

I'll probably have some more comments next weekend.
