Yes, but I have tons of false diff on CVS due to the $Id$ replacement.
This make using git to create a patch difficult.
BUt I can try in Setptember to make a patch directly from CVS.

I think a dedicated config directive for this would be more
convenient, additionally it would probably make sense to add
a configure flag for this.

I agree.
I can also create a new config parameter.
Then wait until September.
