nanoc and octopress can do something similar.  Octopress depends on git 
a bit more - I seem to recall you can use it to deploy websites to 
github as well.  Though the regeneration is local - obviates the need to 
install the software on the server as well.  All you really need to so 
is add a git commit hook to run your static web gen program after 
committing.  You could also obviously add a second line to push it to 
the server (via rsync, etc.).

Cool.  That's the feature I'm interested in.  My site has a blog 
section, filed by date, and article pages, which live outside the blog 
context.  Both of them are indexed by the same tag system.
